As with all licensed hot air balloon operations in South Africa, Discover Ballooning is governed and regulated by CAA (Civil Aviation Authority). We are in possession of a valid AOC (Air Operations Certificate) which is reviewed every year, and we are subjected to a series of inspections and stringent checks.
All our aircraft are inspected and maintained according to the rules and regulations of the SA Civil Aviation Authority, ensuring we are always airworthy and looking good.
Our pilots have a valid balloon rating and are licensed in accordance with the rules and regulations of CAA. To obtain a rating from CAA, one has to fly a minimum number of hours with an instructor, make a solo flight and pass written, oral and flight tests.
All passengers are flown under air services number for Class II (chartering) N606D and for Class III (advertising) G607D, in accordance with the approved operations manual and the provisions of the Air Services Licensing Act 1990 (Act No 74 of 1962), and the Civil Aviation Offences Act 1972 (Act No 10 of 1972).
All necessary insurance is in place for third party liability and passenger liability in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Civil Aviation Authority.
